Providing athletes an unfair advantage

Phillip and Troy Polamalu

Training Roots

My introduction to training began early, during summer visits with my grandfather, Marv Marinovich, the NFL’s first Strength and Conditioning Coach. After developing the basis for the NFL combine, my grandfather went on to train an array of professional athletes, including Troy Polumalu (pictured with Phillip on the left), and BJ Penn. Between exercises, I would watch intently, as he coached with a passion and seriousness that made training feel sacred.

Proven Success

My freshman year of High School, I was a scrawny kid on the freshman football team. Feeling an extreme disadvantage, I put my grandfather’s training methodology to work. By senior year I had gained 30 pounds in muscle, was starting line-backer and team captain of the football team, and league champion in the pole vault. After high school, my training, studies, and experimentation only amplified. During college, I became a national champion rugby player and team captain. After expanding my knowledge while working as a Student Athletic Trainer, I came to understand the direct connection between proper physical training and reduced injury.

After college, I continued to explore new tools and tactics. The more efficient my training became, the more I was capable of, and my interests expanded into endurance trail running, snowboarding, SUP yoga, parkour, and badminton. After volunteering as a youth rugby coach, I recognized an inherent passion for helping young players reach their full potential.

Now I build athletes. Whether you’re a high school player looking to get off the bench, or a collegiate athlete looking to secure your future at the next level, I can help you evolve your game, and give you, what my grandfather would refer to, as an “unfair advantage.”

Why you should choose me

  • Cutting Edge Methods

Unique training techniques, rooted in my grandfather’s research, that you will NOT find anywhere else. While I always tailor training programs to the goals of my clients, I generally focus on functional, high-intensity, plyometric exercises, as well as training that sharpens reaction time, proprioception, and stability.

  • Building Athleticism

While many trainers may focus on general strength and conditioning, I focus on ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE. I don’t care how big your shoulders or quads are; I care about how effective your movement is on the field/court. Regardless of gender, age, and ability level, I can accelerate your performance.

  • Superior Tools

I use cheaper and more effective tools than traditional weight-lifting. This means that you can take your training beyond our sessions with ease. No need to buy a gym membership, or purchase large, costly equipment.

  • Functionality

There’s more and more talk these days of “functional training.” But I have lived it for 15 years, before it was trendy, experimenting on myself in order to hack and fine-tune the most efficient training. I know what works and what doesn’t, and I’m willing to share it all with you.

  • Training Style & Philosophy

I am not a typical “Type A” fitness coach. I have a gentle and easy-going personality, and it is my goal to foster a trusting relationship with my clients, and to create a safe space for them to grow. I am a “zen warrior” and focus just as much on the mental aspects of athletics as the physical. I also believe that understanding WHY we do a certain exercise is very important, so I will always explain the purpose and methodology before implementing a new technique.

“I learned how the muscles work and why each exercise was so important during our sessions, which made every workout more purposeful. Knowing exactly what I was improving and how we were building, ended up being as important as the workouts themselves”
